Girls Hoops Continues Hot Start

While the transition into a new conference in the Tri-Valley League can be difficult for some teams, there’s one team at Norwood High that has had no trouble flying to the top of the standings. The girls basketball team has had a great start to their season, starting 6-0 on their season, winning both close games and blowouts. They started the season with 2 huge wins over two teams that combined for 35 wins last season - 47-31 win over Medway in the season opener and 44-36 over Medfield. They then won a double overtime thriller on the road, taking down Holliston 59-50. Over the Christmas Break, they won the Attleboro Area Tournament with wins over Dighton-Rehobeth in the first round and Attleboro in the championship. They recently took down Milford in dominating fashion, winning 61-19 at home. They play Ashland tonight at Norwood High School to improve to 7-0.

Heading into the season, a start like this seemed improbable to many, as the Lady Mustangs rostered 0 seniors and have 4 freshmen in the rotation. However, these freshmen have had a huge impact, as Meghan Olbrys dropped 21 points in the season opener, as well as being named to the All Tournament Team at the Attleboro Area Tournament. Freshman guard Erin Reen was named tournament MVP with her offensive production while being the leader on the court for the Mustangs. Junior Ally Giambanco gives experience to this very young team, and helped lead a comeback in the first game of the Attleboro Area Tournament, dropping 13 points in the game, 8 of those being in the third quarter.

The Lady Mustangs have 14 games left on their season and are only 4 wins away from qualifying for the postseason. 6 games are at home, including games against Westwood, Hopkinton, and a rematch against Holliston.
